Unchosen Flight

Before revolution and exile divided her life into a before and an after, Nazan Orr knew an Iran alive with gardens, music, ambition, elegant gatherings, and the warmth of family. She was a little girl who moved through the world like a butterfly, a young woman educated abroad, and a multilingual professional who rose to the center of Iran’s commercial life.

Then the country she knew fractured. As fear replaced freedom and the people around her disappeared, Nazan was forced into an escape that would carry her across borders—and into years of rebuilding. From Tehran to London, Paris, San Francisco, Hong Kong, and beyond, she navigated difficult marriages, motherhood, professional reinvention, loss, adventure, and the persistent question of where she truly belonged.

Vivid, candid, and ultimately hopeful, Unchosen Flight is more than a memoir of survival. It is a love letter to a homeland remembered beyond the headlines and the story of a woman who refused to let upheaval have the final word. Through every unexpected turn, Nazan discovers that while we cannot always choose the winds that redirect our lives, we can choose what we carry—and, sometimes, where we finally land.
