When journalist Larry Grobel first met Diane Keaton in 1982, he had no idea that it would lead to an intimate, platonic relationship spanning three decades, during which he became her confidant, paddleball doubles partner, movie date, and after she became a mother, an occasional babysitter for her children. Precipitated by Grobel's close relationship with Al Pacino, who was seeing Keaton at the time, Grobel's proximity to Keaton's inner thoughts extended well past the expiration of her romance with Pacino.
