Cook Like a Rookie

Cook Like a Rookie was inspired by the author's TV series that aired on ROOT Sports Northwest and online, “I Cook, You Measure,” where she's brought nearly 35 pro athletes from the Seahawks and Mariners into the kitchen with her, engaging them in conversation and cooking tips. It is based on the premise that, while professional athletes may be highly skilled on the field, they are helpless in the kitchen. Most athlete cookbooks are about performance nutrition or “eat like the pros.” But this isn’t that book. This is “learn to cook with the pros (who don’t have any clue what they’re doing either).” It’s a “teach yourself to cook” book, through the lens of sports, focused on life skills, deep connection, and just plain fun. Containing 36 delicious recipes from a “clean-out-the-fridge” frittata to Easy Chicken Dinners, its twelve chapters cover every big day in a sports fan's year: Super Bowl Party, All-Star Game FishFeast, Stanley Cup Steak and Potatoes, and more, building all the skills a neophyte cook might need along the way, with opportunities to level up and become their very own Kitchen All-Star. Cook alongside NFL veteran Matt Hasselbeck, WNBA legend Sue Bird, Mariner's All-Star Luis Castillo, and eight other notable figures from the world of sports as they develop their own brand-new set of kitchen skills, and, with tips along the way that go beyond the food—conversation starters, easy table decoration tips, party and get-together ideas—they’ll better understand the power of food and cooking as a connection, just as they already understand the power of sports.
