Strange Creatures

A radical new history of humankind, in the wake of the paradigm-shattering discovery of the Hobbit, a strange relative that reshaped what it means to be human

In the cool depths of a cave on a remote Indonesian island, a team of archaeologists unearthed an astonishing discovery: the fossilized remains of a diminutive human relative, about the size of a toddler but, miraculously, fully grown. This remarkable fossil, soon to be dubbed “the Hobbit,” sparked an international uproar, challenging what we thought we knew about our own evolution—and what it means to be human.

In Strange Creatures, Paige Madison traces the Hobbit’s story and its profound implications for our understanding of human nature. The existence of this tool-wielding, seafaring species—one of many “strange creatures beyond count” who once shared the planet with us—shatters the myth of humanity's singular and inevitable rise to the apex of evolution. Instead, it reveals a richly diverse and interconnected tree of life, where we are just one branch among many.

From excavation sites to museum halls, Madison explores not only the revelations of this discovery but also its social and political ramifications. The Hobbit's tale reveals how science shapes, and is shaped by, cultural biases and debates—forcing us to reconsider how knowledge is created, interpreted, and applied.

Strange Creatures is the gripping tale of one of the 21st century’s most seismic scientific discoveries—a new relative that troubles our ideas of human exceptionalism and revolutionizes our understanding of ourselves.
