First Draft Is Free: Reorganizing Work and Learning with AI

What once took hours, AI can now draft in seconds. But what does that mean for your work, your career, and the skills you’ll need next?

The answer depends on more than what AI can do.

The same technology can replace a task, transform a job, or create entirely new possibilities. Whether AI substitutes for people or makes them more effective depends on how work is organized: what we delegate, how we redesign work, and where people retain judgment and authority.

But AI creates a second challenge. The assignments it can now perform were often how people learned to exercise judgment. What happens to expertise when AI takes over the work through which people once learned?

In The First Draft Is Free, Yale professor K. Sudhir draws on research and stories from businesses, professions, and classrooms to give readers a simple way to make better decisions about AI—in their own work, in the organizations they lead, and in how they learn. He shows how to rethink work and develop the expertise that future work will require.

The first draft is free. The work begins after.
