This new standalone legal thriller from former FBI director James Comey, featuring characters from his celebrated Nora Carleton series, follows the case of a Virginia civil rights attorney accused of murdering a police officer.

In Richmond, Virginia, disillusioned former-prosecutor-turned-defense-attorney Bobby Black is roped into representing someone who doesn’t want his help. Defendant Michael Taylor proclaims his innocence in the killing of Officer Bo Davenport but he doesn’t trust that the legal system will be able to save him from the death penalty, having witnessed it fail Black people time and time again in his career as a civil rights attorney.

As bad actors work to frighten them off the case and obscure the truth, Bobby calls on former colleague Nora Carleton and legendary investigator Benny Dugan to help navigate the cross currents of modern policing and Richmond’s difficult past. With Michael’s life in their hands, Bobby and his defense team must find a way to build a relationship with their client while confronting the individuals and societal forces bent on killing him for a crime he swears he didn’t commit.

Informed by Comey’s own work as a federal prosecutor in Richmond, The Weight of Evidence brings the courtroom to life with a twisting federal death penalty trial where the city’s past and present mean that nothing is quite what it appears.
