Honor Restored

A battle-hardened cavalry veteran walks out of the wreckage of the Civil War and straight into the next one — the brutal, unglamorous fight over what America is actually going to be. Honor Restored is the kind of historical fiction that makes you feel the mud on your boots and the weight of a country trying to put itself back together one impossible choice at a time.

Book Five in The Drieborg Chronicles

A man who's already crossed every line the law draws is now the law.

Michael Drieborg came home from the war a different man. He buried his wife. He buried his son. He did what he had to do to the people responsible, and he's made his peace with God, if not with the courts. Now Congressman Kellogg is sending him south with a badge, four deputies, and a mandate from the Joint Committee on Reconstruction, into a South Carolina still smoldering with resentment, where the ink on the new amendments is barely dry and the old order is already clawing its way back.

Washington is playing its own game. Political enemies circle. A congressman's daughter is spiraling toward ruin. And the men who want Mike neutralized are not above hiring someone to do it on a dark street near the canal.

In the Carolinas, Mike finds a land of burned-out towns, desperate freedmen, and a Southern aristocracy that lost the war but hasn't accepted it. The mission is simple on paper: observe, report, and advise. The reality is something else entirely.

Honor Restored is the story of a man trying to rebuild himself and his country at the same time, knowing that neither job is clean, and neither will ever be finished.

Perfect for readers of Jeff Shaara and Charles Frazier, or anyone who wants their history to come with mud on its boots.
