Woman with the Wicked Face: A Novel Inspired by the Life of Theda Bara

Before Marilyn or Audrey, there was Theda Bara, the original on-screen vamp who defined the early silent film era while quietly fighting to maintain her independence off-camera. This vibrant biographical novel captures the glamorous, ruthless birth of the Hollywood studio system and the extraordinary woman who became its very first icon.

She was the world's first cinematic monster, but her greatest performance was surviving the men who created her.

Before Hollywood had a name, Theodosia Goodman was just a struggling stage actress with a dark, expressive face and a hunger for absolute freedom. To survive a cutthroat industry ruled by predatory studio bosses, she must shed her midwestern roots and become someone else entirely. She embraces a morally gray persona, transforming into Theda Bara, an exotic, man-devouring siren who shocks the nation and builds a million-dollar film empire.

But portraying the most wicked woman on screen comes with a devastating price. As the studio system tightens its grip on her fabricated identity, Theda finds herself trapped inside the very cage she constructed. She possesses wealth and global fame, yet she is completely isolated. When a brilliant director enters her life and sparks a simmering slow burn romance, she faces a terrifying crossroads. Risking her carefully guarded heart could cost her the hard-won independence she so fiercely protects. Letting her true self shine might be the only way to survive the crushing weight of her own legend.

For fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid and The Girls in the Picture, perfect for readers who love a morally gray female lead, historical glamour, female rage, and slow burn romance.
