This is My Family

This powerful picture book from award-winning creators Baptiste Paul and Selina Alko recounts how a seemingly innocent class photo project inspires awareness and empathy in readers of all ages.

It’s back-to-school time, and Sol is starting over. She and her mother had to leave their home, and Sol is nervous to go to a new school in a new place. When Mr. Mason’s first assignment is a family presentation, Sol doesn’t know what to do. She doesn’t have any photos of her family, so how can she show she belongs? With her mother’s support, Sol decides to draw pictures of what she remembers.

This moving story of one girl’s efforts to fit her past into a class assignment reminds us of just how varied a family’s background can be—and how important it is to have understanding and compassion for everyone.
