It was\u003cbr\u003e published in 1982 in a limited edition of 100 copies… For me,\u003cbr\u003e the photographs taken between 1980 and 1981 are among\u003cbr\u003e the best and most impressive images that Erasmus – then still\u003cbr\u003e a very young man – ever took,’ says his wife Annette Schröter.\u003cbr\u003e Erasmus Schröter took the pictures for this book on infrared\u003cbr\u003e film using the so-called ”black flash method.” It was never clarified\u003cbr\u003e how he was able to obtain this film material at the time,\u003cbr\u003e but he was fascinated by the possibilities of this technique\u003cbr\u003e and used it intensively on his excursions into the nightlife of\u003cbr\u003e the GDR, mainly in Leipzig. The images show people waiting,\u003cbr\u003e ball and opera goers, lovers, dancers, tattooed men at fairs,\u003cbr\u003e circus people and artists’ festivals. The images – transcendent\u003cbr\u003e and blurred – create the atmosphere of a surreal theatre.\u003cbr\u003e Erasmus Schröter (1956–2021) left the GDR in 1985 in protest\u003cbr\u003e and only returned to his hometown of Leipzig in the 1990s.\u003cbr\u003e In addition to his profession as a photographer, he was also\u003cbr\u003e a passionate collector of GDR children’s toys and GDR architecture\u003cbr\u003e postcards. He repeatedly incorporated both into his\u003cbr\u003e works and exhibitions.
